From November 2010 to October 2011, BMI Healthcare - with the support of daytime TV's Dr Hilary Jones - will be holding free "Inspect Your Health!" health promotion events for thousands of people in businesses and community centres of activity (shopping centres, town halls, local supermarkets, etc) across the country.
During these events, BMI nurses will provide one of three types of checks. The three types of health checks businesses or community centres can choose from are key indicators for some of the UK's most prevalent diseases:
Blood pressure - High blood pressure can increase risk of heart attacks and strokes
Blood cholesterol and blood glucose - High cholesterol can increase risk of heart disease or stroke and abnormal glucose levels can indicate risk of diabetes or hypoglycaemia
Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage - Being obese increases risk of several diseases and conditions including: type 2 diabetes, infertility, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers
What happens during a mini health check?
Each mini health check will be carried out in privacy and take around 5-10 minutes. After the health check the BMI nurse will provide the individual with a record of the results and offer the appropriate personalised advice. Here is a description of what happens during each test:
Blood pressure
A nurse will use an electronic blood pressure monitor, strapped to the arm, to record an individual's blood pressure.
Glucose and cholesterol
The check for blood glucose and cholesterol involves a finger prick test where the nurse makes a quick, tiny puncture to the finger. The blood is analysed on the spot and the results are available after a minute or so.
Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage
The nurse measures the individual's height and weight and based on these results is able to calculate their body mass index. The individual will be asked to stand on the body fat analysis scales machine which will calculate their weight and will then be used to determine their body fat percentage
What else do people get during an "Inspect Your Health!" event?
Individuals will receive:
A confidential record of their results
Personalised advice on how to maintain and/or improve their wellbeing based on the individual's test results
A goody bag with advice leaflets and other tools to help promote healthy living

The purpose of 'Inspect Your Health!' is to help people take better control of their health and wellbeing and gain peace of mind about their health. The mini health checks we offer will help to detect any high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes and/or an unhealthy Body Mass Index (BMI), which are all contributing factors to cardiovascular disease and other prevalent diseases in the UK.
Dr Hilary Jones, who also practices as a GP conducting health checks at BMI The Hampshire Clinic in Basingstoke is proudly supporting the campaign. He said, "I have been providing health checks to patients for several years now and have seen the difference it can make in people's lives. I think it's fantastic that BMI hospitals are volunteering its staff to provide this important free service to their local businesses and communities. To get these tests and results in one sitting at your workplace or shopping centre is a unique opportunity."
He added, "Especially during tough economic times when people are less likely to take time off work to see their GP, it's easy for people to leave their health concerns at the bottom of their priority list. The "Inspect Your Health!" campaign will make it very convenient for people all over the country to access a series of tests which can help determine some of the UK's most widespread health risks before they become too serious. Some people are sceptical or intimidated by health checks, but the bottom line is that early detection can help save lives."

Did you know...?
Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the UK, affecting 1 in 3 people. There are approximately 2.6 million people living with coronary heart disease today. It is clinically proven that early detection of diseases, which enable earlier treatment and more effective disease management, can extend survival rates and improve quality of life.
One of the most common causes of heart disease is high cholesterol
Heart disease is responsible for approximately 250 UK deaths every day
Every six minutes someone dies from a heart attack
One of the main causes of heart disease is obesity, which kills more than 70,000 people in the UK every year
There are approximately half a million people in the UK who have diabetes but do not know it
Please note that the mini health checks provided at an 'Inspect Your Health' event should not be considered a full health check. The nurses on the day will not have access to your full medical details and as a result any advice given to you by BMI Healthcare will be based on the results of the tests taken at that moment in time. If you have any concerns regarding your health we advise you seek immediate guidance from your GP.
