Dr Amjed Khan has worked as a Doctor for more than 30 years, and has more than 25 years of experience in Cardiology, including 16 years at a Consultant level. During this time, he has worked in various hospitals, from London to Dundee and has had the opportunity to work at many specialist cardiac centres including Glenfield (Groby Road) Hospital, Leicester, Wythenshawe, and Manchester Royal Infirmary.
He was a Clinical Lecturer at Manchester University for 5 years. Dr Khan has had the privilege to work in several specialist services including a heart transplant team, heart failure clinic, lipid clinic, secondary prevention clinics, heart clinical trials unit, and a heart drug (pharmacology) unit.
Dr Khan has also participated in key research, including £1.5m funding from the NHS for one project looking into the management of heart attacks in women; £440,000 from BHF and £200,000 from the NHS for another project on health inequalities. His important research has been published in highly-ranked and respected medical journals, such as Lancet and Heart. His research has aided in the development of a new heart transplant technique, change government cholesterol guidelines, streamlined the angiogram technique, demonstrate the importance of heart failure clinics, and showed the lack of heart protection from hormone replacement treatment. Dr Khan also conducted important work that is helping to understand and resolve heart health inequalities by looking at patient’s perceptions of their health, how they access health care, and how the NHS can better engage these patients and make sure they are receiving the correct treatment. This work also involved setting up community cardiovascular screening services.
Dr Khan's responsibilities as an NHS Consultant Cardiologist include dealing with cardiology emergencies, cardiology on-call across 3 hospitals, outpatient clinics, and having access to a wide range of cardiac investigations and treatments. He looks after patients presenting with palpitations, chest pains, breathlessness, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, dizziness, and blackouts. He is also a member of the weekly multidisciplinary team meetings for heart failure, angina and pacemakers, and supervises a weekly cardioversion list where patients receive a controlled electric shock to regulate their heartbeats again.
He also works in the Cardiac Cather laboratory performing pacemakers to treat patients with slow heartbeats, angiograms to investigate patients with chest pains or heart failure, and inserting small heartbeat monitoring device known as an internal loop recorder in the chest wall to help diagnose patients who suffer from dizzy spells and blackouts.
Dr Khan set up 'Heart Specialist Clinic Ltd' to treat his private patients with treatments tailored to their individual needs. He caters to the full range of cardiac problems from diagnosing to treating cardiac patients directly or through his network. In addition to the conditions he treats in the NHS, he also sees patients to assess cardiac risks, heart check-ups, discuss lifestyles and perform DVLA and CAA treadmill tests. Dr Khan sees a variety of patients from professionals, business people, athletes (including professional footballers), and international patients. He is currently serving on The Highfield Hospital Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) for a second time.
He was awarded several clinical excellence awards for his contribution to the NHS. His contributions have also been recognised outside the NHS and he was honoured to become a TEDx speaker (2019) and awarded the Northern Asian Power list (Top 100, 2020) as a thought leader.
Dr Khan is also involved in charity work which includes supporting Ghurki Teaching Hospital Trust (Lahore, Pakistan) and currently looking at the feasibility of developing a non-profit standalone Cardiology Hospital in Sahiwal, Pakistan.
He has also given interviews on TV and radio to discuss and raise awareness of cardiac health issues and related to charity projects.
