Mr Andrew Gordon

Professional Profile

Mr Gordon has been a consultant general surgeon for nearly 30 years, having worked at Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals until 2017. His undergraduate education was at the London Hospital Medical College.  He subsequently trained in surgery in London, Leeds, Bristol and Oxford, where he undertook research for his thesis.  His principal interests are upper gastrointestinal surgery, general paediatric surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

He has extensive experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery (gallbladder, hiatus hernia surgery and open and laparoscopic groin hernia surgery), emergency general surgery and general paediatric surgery, as well as in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Having been appointed as a consultant at the time that laparoscopic surgery was evolving he was involved in the introduction and development of minimally-invasive surgery in a variety of fields.

As a consultant in East Berkshire he performed almost all the elective general paediatric surgery e.g. for hernia, hydrocele and undescended testis. He continues to perform operations for minor anal disorders such as piles, tags and fissure/fistula-in-ano. He performs large numbers of gastroscopy and colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy investigations.  He also has an interest in thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.

In NHS and private practice he has performed a large number of operations for hiatus hernia, laparoscopic operations for gallbladder disease, hernia repairs (open and laparoscopic), thoracoscopic sympathectomy operations, operations for infantile hernia and hydrocele, operations for undescended testis in children and many operations for piles/minor skin lesions.

He spent a 4-year period as an honorary consultant vascular surgeon at The John Radcliffe Hospital when the vascular service was transferred there between 2012 and 2015, as well as continuing general surgical practice in East Berkshire. Since leaving Wexham Park, he has worked as a general surgeon in New Zealand for nearly 18 months, in Guernsey for six months and in various hospitals in Scotland.

As a consultant he ran many courses at Wexham Park and for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as well as teaching on courses run by other colleagues.  Having a major interest in medical education, he was the Programme Director for the higher surgical trainees in the Oxford scheme for trainee surgeons for a five-year period between 2009 and 2014.
