Personal Profile

Dr Ankur Gulati is a consultant intervention cardiologist with a high-volume NHS practice at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Lewisham Greenwich NHS Trusts. He regularly cares for patients with all types of cardiac problems including abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, valvular disease and health screening. He has particular expertise in the percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease (stenting) and managing associated cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.

He graduated in medicine from Cambridge University, where he was also awarded a first-class BA Hons degree in cardiovascular physiology and consecutive university scholarships. After attaining ‘High Honours’ for his cardiology sub-internship at Harvard University, he completed his junior doctor training in highly sought-after rotations at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham.

He obtained higher specialist training in both cardiology and general internal medicine at several leading London institutions, including:

  • Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital
  • The Royal Brompton Hospital
  • The London Chest and Royal London Hospitals
  • The National Heart and University College Hospitals

Not only has he achieved dual accreditation in Cardiology and General Medicine, but he has developed sub-specialist interests within multiple cardiology domains through dedicated fellowships in:

  • Complex coronary intervention (angioplasty)
  • Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI)
  • Cardiac CT imaging
  • Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure

As a result, he has accrued an extensive knowledge base and is able to provide an expert assessment across the full range of cardiac symptoms and disorders.

His clinical skillsets are complimented by a strong track-record in research, education and innovation. He has both published and reviewed numerous research articles, and was awarded an MD from Cambridge University for his investigation of the role of cardiac MRI in dilated cardiomyopathy. His research was rewarded with the prestigious International Young Investigator of the Year Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

He is a passionate teacher and is committed to mentoring medical students and cardiology trainee doctors. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he has received letters of commendation from Kings College London. He was selected to be the inaugural ‘Clinical Champion’ at the Barts Cardiovascular Device Hub. Through this role he gained expertise in developing and appraising new technologies and treatments. Consequently, he is ideally placed to ensure that his patients can receive the latest advancements in cardiovascular innovation.
