Personal Profile

Miss Carol Xie is a Consultant ENT and Otology Surgeon at the Hampshire Clinic and the Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and is one of the auditory implant surgeons at the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service.

She completed her ENT training in London and undertook rotations at Guy’s and St Thomas’, Great Ormond Street and St George’s Hospitals. She completed a MSc in Otology & Audiology from the Ear Institute of University College London, achieving a distinction (2019). Within the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS), she is a key member of the auditory implant team, participating in the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). She pioneered and established the cochlear implant service at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in 2023, expanding the USAIS hub and spoke model, demonstrating her commitment to service development and innovation.

She has accrued a comprehensive logbook of thousands of operations, including over a hundred and sixty cochlear implants. Miss Xie’s specialist focus spans various aspects of Otology, encompassing areas such as tinnitus, dizziness, surgical restoration of hearing, ear canal surgery, repair of ear drum perforations, middle ear and mastoid surgery, lateral skull base surgery and auditory implants (which include bone conduction hearing implants, active middle ear implants and cochlear implants).

She also manages a broad spectrum of general ENT concerns in both paediatric and adult patients, including but not limited to sleep disordered breathing, tonsil and adenoid disease, nose and sinus problems and eustachian tube problems (eg. problems with equalising ears on flights and diving).

Beyond her clinical expertise, Miss Xie has made significant contributions to ENT research, published extensively on various ENT topics such as drug delivery to the inner ear, parotid disease and childhood airway disease. Her research findings have been presented on international platforms.

A firm believer in effective communication with patients and colleagues, Miss Xie embraces a philosophy of continual learning from others to consistently strive for the best possible outcomes.

Outside of work, Miss Xie enjoys time with her young family, cycling and running.
