Professional Profile

Dr Catherine Mathews is an experienced consultant Rheumatologist based in South East London. She is expert in treating all aspects of musculoskeletal disease in both adults and children.

She qualified from Cambridge University in 1995, undertaking her specialist Rheumatology training in London, and has been a practising consultant since 2006.  She is currently a departmental head of Rheumatology and maintains close professional relationships with many other experts in their field. At the Blackheath Hospital she sees patients with a wide range of conditions that can cause joint or muscle problems including inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis, gout, back and neck conditions, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, calcium crystal diseases, giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.

Dr Mathews is a senior hospital director with responsibility for the training of medical students and trainee doctors across all specialities. She has also held roles at the Royal College of Physicians, is a former Rheumatology president at the Royal Society of Medicine and has published widely on her clinical and educational interests, including authoring national guidelines for the treatment of common rheumatological conditions.
