Personal Profile

Personal Profile

Dr Faidon Laskaratos is a consultant gastroenterologist with a sub-specialist interest in advanced luminal and small bowel endoscopy at St Mark’s Hospital in London, an internationally renowned centre of excellence for intestinal disorders and endoscopy.

Dr Laskaratos completed his gastroenterology training in the North Central/North East Thames rotation in London and worked in several tertiary hospitals, including the Royal Free Hospital and University College Hospital. He then completed the highly sought-after advanced endoscopy fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital, where he trained in advanced colonoscopy techniques, polyp resection and small bowel enteroscopy, before his substantive consultant appointment as a specialist endoscopist in the Wolfson Unit for Endoscopy at St Mark’s.

Dr Laskaratos prides himself on delivering the highest quality patient care with a focus on patient experience and clinical outcomes. His clinical interests include general and luminal gastroenterology, and he sees patients with common conditions, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), Barrett's oesophagus, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhoea, constipation, and bloating.

He specialises in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including advanced colonoscopy, complex polypectomy, video capsule endoscopy and small bowel endoscopy. He is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (requiring a rigorous accreditation process and continual audit of key performance indicators). He also has a special clinical and research interest in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours.

Dr Laskaratos is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London (MRCP) and a member of the British Medical Association (BMA). He is also a member of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS). He is the recipient of multiple national and international awards, including several prizes from the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), and was nominated as a “rising star in gastroenterology” by Frontiers in Medicine (2022).

Driven by his passion for translational clinical research that can benefit patients, Dr Laskaratos completed a PhD in Gastroenterology at University College London (UCL), which investigated the biology of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours. His research led to numerous publications and conference abstracts, as well as two successful funding applications totalling over £1m. He has also published widely in the field of endoscopy, and particularly on video capsule endoscopy, a minimally invasive wireless camera that can be swallowed by the patient and take a video recording while it travels through the gut.

Dr Laskaratos has a strong interest in teaching and has completed a Masters degree (MSc) in medical education at UCL. He regularly teaches medical students, gastroenterology trainees and fellows, as well as visiting gastroenterologists and is clinical supervisor for trainee doctors.
