Professional Profile

Dr Contractor is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Wythenshawe Hospital. He graduated his MBChB with Commendation in 2001 from the University of Aberdeen and also has an Intercalated BSc in Molecular and Cell Biology (1st Class Hons) in 1999. After completing his SHO training in Australia and Bristol, Dr Contractor trained as an interventional cardiologist in Manchester. Completing a DPhil (PhD) in 2012 at the University of Oxford in the field of ischemia-reperfusion injury and cardioprotective strategies, he has published widely in this field.

In 2015 Dr Contractor gained the highly prestigious Boston Scientific Interventional Fellowship to Vancouver Island, Canada, where he completed his training. He has been a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital since 2016 where he specialises in complex angioplasty and chronic total occlusions. He has a strong interest in cardiac secondary preventive strategies and is the current Strategic Cardiac Network Lead for secondary prevention.

Dr Contractor remains highly active in clinical research and is the Clinical Research Lead for Cardiology and Cardiothoracics across Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He regularly speaks at conferences both nationally and internationally and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Clinically he maintains a high-volume PCI practice regularly performing the highest volume of PCIs in the region and has also developed novel treatments including renal denervation for high blood pressure.

Clinical Interests

He has a specialist interest in coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes and is particularly involved in complex coronary intervention and chronic total occlusion angioplasty. However, the scope of his work also encompasses the full range of cardiac problems including complex valve disease, cardiac rhythm management, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, heart failure, palpitations, blackouts and cardiomyopathies.
