Mr Iain Jourdan is Director of Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Senior Laparoscopic Tutor at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit, which is the UK's leading centre for training in keyhole surgical techniques. He has a special interest in colorectal and keyhole surgery.
Mr Jourdan received specialist training in laparoscopic surgery at the European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg.
He performed the world’s first 3D keyhole gallbladder operation in 2010 and is a world leader in developing this safer keyhole surgical technique, which involves much less trauma for the patient and a quicker recovery time. The use of 3D technology in keyhole surgery gives a realistic perspective of the area inside the patient’s body and can be more accurate, reducing the risk of complications such as damaging nearby blood vessels or nerves.
Mr Jourdan has published widely, including a study which showed that 3D imagery helps keyhole surgeons to perform faster and with fewer mistakes in laboratory conditions, which he has subsequently performed for many patients.
Mr Jourdan is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, The Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland and sits on the committee of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons.
Mr Jourdan specialises in minimally invasive surgery for hernias (groin, umbilical, abdominal), gallstones and conditions of the large bowel, including bowel cancer. He also sees patients for diagnosis and treatment of irritable bowel problems (constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and pain), diverticular disease, pelvic floor trouble (incontinence or prolapse), anal conditions (bleeding, haemorrhoids, fistular and fissure as well as infections around the anus) and lumps and bumps, including lipomas and cysts.
Training and Appointment
Educated at Cambridge University and St Thomas' Hospital in central London, Mr Iain Jourdan qualified in 1992 and was subsequently awarded a Master of Surgery with Distinction in 2004.Mr Jourdan received specialist training in laparoscopic surgery at the European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg.

Current Practice
He became a Consultant General Surgeon in 2005 and works at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, as well as leading the Endoscopy service at Mount Alvernia Hospital. He was instrumental in securing JAG accreditation for the hospital in 2020.
