Mr Ian Ambrose Consultant Ophthalmologist

Personal Profile

Mr Ian Ambrose is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Glaucoma surgery and complex cataract surgery, he is the Glaucoma service lead for Hampshire Hospitals NHS trust. Mr Ambrose sees both insured patients as well as self-paying patients and as well as being a glaucoma specialist has a very strong background in general ophthalmology so can help with a wide variety of eye problems.

Mr Ambrose graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2009 having been awarded an Exhibition scholarship prize and then completed his training as an Ophthalmologist in the Wessex region.  After completing his training, he was quickly appointed to his first substantive consultant post in Ashford and St Peters Hospital.  Here, he developed and led the Digital Surveillance Clinic for Glaucoma, a first of its kind in the Surrey region – this new clinic successfully eliminated the extensive backlog in cases waiting for glaucoma appointments within the hospital catchment area.  Following this, Mr Ambrose had the opportunity to return to the Wessex region where he previously trained and is now the Clinical Lead for Glaucoma at Hampshire Hospitals and an accredited Educational Supervisor for surgeons in training.  He has regular NHS clinics and surgical sessions at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Andover War Memorial Hospital.

Mr Ambrose has extensive experience in glaucoma assessment and ongoing care, general ophthalmology and complex cataract surgery.  He is a clinical supervisor and regularly trains junior surgeons in both glaucoma and cataract surgery.  Mr Ambrose offers expert diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and other eye conditions, including cataract surgery, trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt devices, micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), glaucoma laser and offering treatment for lumps and bumps.  As well as being experienced in providing complex surgery, Mr Ambrose offers less invasive procedures such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty which can reduce the need to use glaucoma drops with some patients being entirely eyedrop free. Mr Ambrose has a very low complication rate when operating and his cataract surgery complication rate is significantly lower than would be expected when measured against national level statistics, despite having a cohort of patients with increased surgical risk factors.

In his spare time Mr Ambrose enjoys looking after his garden as well as spending time with his wife and daughter.  They live together in a village location with their Poodles, Maine Coon cats, Guinea pigs and rabbits.  Mr Ambrose is also passionate about sustainability and green living and the new technologies that can be employed to help reduce our carbon footprint.

Mr Ambrose prides himself on being an excellent communicator and ensuring his patients are involved in, and understand, their individualised care plans.
