Personal Profile

Professor Ioanna Nixon is a Senior Clinical Oncologist at the Beatson WOSCC with over 15 years of experience in cancer management. She has a special interest in the management of Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Bone Sarcomas, and GISTs, with extensive experience on chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. She has led the development of sarcoma services across Scotland as the National Lead for the Scottish Sarcoma Network (2016 to 2021). 

Professor Nixon is a Professor at Strathclyde University, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. She has served in National leadership roles as the UK Chair for the NCRI (National Cancer Research Institute) Head and Neck epidemiology and survivorship subgroup and board member of the New Drugs Committee. She is Cancer Innovation Lead for West of Scotland, and Chair for the Regional Quality Improvement Group, a Board member of the British Sarcoma Group, and a member of the NCRI Soft Tissue Sarcoma Clinical Research Group (CSG).

Professor Nixon’s main research interests are novel therapies for sarcomas, technical radiotherapy, patient experience, and clinical innovations. She is Principal investigator in several National and International clinical trials, and she offers a diverse research portfolio for patients with sarcoma diagnosis at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. She led on the development of the National Sarcoma Research Strategy and is leading on the clinical data collection stream for the Sarcoma Accelerator Consortium, through the CRUK Accelerator Award.

In 2018 Professor Nixon was awarded as a Founding Fellow of Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) for leadership and contribution to improving patient-centred care. Her team were finalists for the British Medical Journal Awards Cancer Team of the Year 2020 for National Sarcoma MDT improvement work. She is currently working with patients, carers, and staff on the iCARE project, to prioritise innovation in Cancer Care for and with patients. She is committed to compassionate care, always taking a holistic approach to patient care  meeting them where their unique needs are. 

In 2023, Professor Nixon was named as a winner at the Scottish Women’s Awards 2023. Professor Nixon was given the accolade for her work in Medicine, focussing on her work as a Consultant Oncologist as well as her fund-raising activities for cancer charities.
