Mr Jasvir Virdee is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and neuro-ophthalmologist. His areas of expertise are neuro-ophthalmology, cataract surgery, strabismus (squint) management and surgery, as well as general ophthalmology. He works in the NHS as a substantive consultant at Southampton General Hospital. He sees self-pay and insured patients and is registered with most major insurers.

Mr Virdee has a logical and methodical approach to his work, with a keen eye for detail. He spends time with patients, exploring their needs, concerns and the best way to help them. He holds advanced training in his fields of practice, and always practices the most up to date, evidenced-based medicine. He is constantly looking to improve and find new and better ways to benefit patients both medically and surgically.

He holds numerous publications in scientific journals, and has delivered conference presentations internationally. He also reviews articles for journals, ensuring high standards in research are maintained. In his NHS practice, Mr Virdee receives referrals from other eye specialists around the country to his practice at a major tertiary teaching hospital and sits on numerous multidisciplinary teams, offering an advisory role to other medical practitioners.

Mr Virdee’s interests are in the medical and surgical management of eye disease. He has a sub-specialist interest in neuro-ophthalmology. This is a specialty concerned with the eyes and the brain, involving a wide range of symptoms and disorders. In addition, he offers general ophthalmology consultations. Mr Virdee also holds a special interest in cataract surgery. He performs bespoke treatment for cataracts, tailored to each patient, including microincision “keyhole” cataract surgery, and premium lens insertion to reduce the need for spectacle dependence after surgery. He also undertakes medical and surgical management of squint (ocular misalignment) with adjustable stitches to fine-tune the surgical result, aiming for the best outcomes for patients.

As a neuro-ophthalmologist, Mr Virdee often works with other teams within the hospital, including neurologists, other eye surgeons, radiologists and oncologists.

Mr Virdee trained as an ophthalmologist in the West Midlands and spent 2 years, including a fellowship, dedicated to neuro-ophthalmology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, the largest neuro-ophthalmology unit in Europe. During this time, he trained under eminent figures, including Professor Mollan, a world expert in optic nerve disease, and Mr Jacks, a renowned squint surgeon. During his training, Mr Virdee won numerous prizes for academic performance at medical school, graduating with Honours, and the Roper Hall medal competition during his ophthalmic training.

He regularly teaches and trains colleagues and juniors. This includes being a supervisor for junior colleagues both in the clinic and operating theatre. He is also a lecturer at the teaching programme in the Caribbean in his specialist field. Being a Royal College Examiner, Mr Virdee ensures that high standards are met for the next generation of ophthalmologists.
