Personal Profile

Mr M Al-Maiyah is a highly regarded experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and ankle surgeon. His practice encompasses all aspects of diagnosis and treatment (operative and non-operative) of foot and ankle disorders, as well as complex Trauma, bone infection, and limb reconstruction surgery.

He completed his higher surgical training in the north of England and undertook more than two years of fellowships in foot and ankle surgery and trauma/limb reconstruction in Birmingham, Liverpool, and Australia.

He worked as a consultant at The James Cook University Hospital from June 2014 till April 2021, before moving to Surrey, now he is working at Croydon University Hospital, as Foot & ankle and complex Trauma surgeon.

Mr Al-Maiyah has experience in all aspects of this area; treating both elective and traumatic conditions. He has a large revision practice and often sees patients for a second opinion.

What Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgery?

Orthopaedic foot and Ankle surgery is a specialised field within orthopaedic surgery that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of disorders and injuries affecting the foot and ankle. The Foot & ankle are complex structures that played a crucial role in providing stability, Support, and mobility to the body.

Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons are medical doctors who have completed higher national Orthopaedic training and additional training specifically in Foot and ankle conditions. There are experts in the musculoskeletal system of the foot and ankle and have extensive knowledge of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves in this area.

Training

To become an Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon, Mr. Al-Maiyah has undertaken 23 years of training. During this time he gained degrees in medicine, and higher surgical training in Orthopaedic Surgery- at Northern Deanery- England. He has been awarded fellowships in Trauma & Orthopaedics by the royal college of Surgeons of England and Glasgow.

Fellowships

Both his Australian fellowships were recognised by The Australian Orthopaedic Association. The Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) is the peak professional organisation for orthopaedic surgery in Australia. His foot & ankle fellowship was at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group, and his complex trauma/ limb reconstruction was at Royal Brisbane Hospital.

His BOA traditional fellowship in Birmingham, at Queen Elizabeth Hospitals was one of the prestigious fellowships of the British Orthopaedic Association.

Appointment as a Consultant

Mr Al-Maiyah was awarded his CCT, Certificate of Completion of Training in 2012. He then was appointed as a consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tees Hospitals in 2014. In 2021, he moved to London to work at Croydon University Hospital as a consultant Foot & ankle/ Trauma surgeon.

Teaching

Mr. Al-Maiyah has a passion for training and teaching the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. He mentors both undergraduates and postgraduate trainees. He regularly teaches doctors, nurses, and podiatrists. He is an educational supervisor for Orthopaedic specialty trainees, where he thrives to maximise their learning and training experience. Mr. Al-Maiyah teaches in FRCS Tr. & Orth preparation courses. He regularly lectures medical and nursing students. He authored chapters in books dedicated to the preparation of specialty exit FRCS Orth Examinations.

Research

Mr Al-Maiyah maintains a healthy strong interest in research, aiming to improve the quality and outcome of care for patients. He has authored many peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at international Trauma & Orthopaedics conferences.

Mr Al-Maiyah is a reviewer for the British Bone and joint surgery journal and the National Institute of Health Research.
