Background

Mr Cumberbatch is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield.

He graduated from University College London (UCL) in 2008 and during his medical school training attended the Welcome Institute where he obtained a scholarship to complete an Intercalated BSc in the History of Medicine. In 2010, Mr Cumberbatch completed his Foundation Training in the Nottingham deanery, spending rotations in vascular and orthopaedic surgery before being awarded the highly competitive Academic Clinical Fellowship by the Yorkshire deanery funded through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). During his core surgical training he secured over £250,000 from the prestigious Welcome Trust to support a PhD in cancer biology (a feat rarely achieved by a surgeon). In 2018 Mr Cumberbatch was awarded an Academic Clinical Lectureship by the NIHR and in 2019 he was granted the Ellison-Cliffe Foundation Award by the Royal Society of Medicine to spend a year in Melbourne, Australia, learning robot assisted surgery and novel cancer diagnostics.

Research and Publications

Throughout his career, Mr Cumberbatch has provided care in receipt of excellent 360-degree appraisal and feedback. He has presented at numerous international conferences including those in Japan, Spain, and Denmark, and has resided on the European prostate cancer guideline panel since 2015. Mr Cumberbatch has also been instrumental in establishing the urology research unit at the Royal Hallamshire and is the principal investigator on a number of NIHR portfolio clinical trials investigating the use of robotics in minimally invasive surgery, patient outcome measures and cancer screening. Mr Cumberbatch has published >45 research papers in high impact journals and has an international reputation for his understanding of cancer epidemiology. He is the co-applicant on current research grants exceeding £3million investment.

Mr Cumberbatch is the regional uro-oncology MDT lead and heads up the foundation doctor programme for urology.
