Personal Profile
Mr. Mike Kent is a fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interests in primary and revision hip replacement, hip trauma surgery, and primary knee replacement.
He qualified as a doctor from Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School in 2004 and completed basic surgical training in Australia and on the south coast before being appointed to the Wessex higher training scheme in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2007. He achieved a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013 and completed a postgraduate MSc in Trauma Surgery at the University of Swansea in 2013.
Mike undertook subspecialty fellowship training in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty and trauma in Perth, Western Australia, and Southampton, UK.
In 2015, Mike was appointed as a substantive consultant at Torbay Hospital in Devon (a national centre for ambulatory surgery) where he pioneered successful pathways for day-case joint replacements and was the first surgeon in the South West to successfully undertake a day case hip replacement in September 2018.
As a Consultant, he has performed over 1000 joint replacements and was a highly rated trainer in the Peninsula Deanery.
After five years in Devon, Mike and his family decided to move back to Dorset and in 2020 he was appointed as a substantive consultant at University Hospitals Dorset, working at Poole and Royal Bournemouth Hospitals
Mike has published several research papers in his fields of interest, including enhanced recovery after joint replacement and service improvement in trauma, and continues to present at international conferences and webinars, and international ambulatory surgery meetings focusing on enhanced recovery and day-case arthroplasty.
In 2019 he and his team won an international award for the design and implementation of their successful day-case hip pathway.
Mike was selected to co-lead a Devon STP steering group on enhanced recovery after hip and knee replacement, before returning to Dorset to work at UHD.
Mike is a strong believer in enhanced recovery principles, enabling patients to safely mobilise more quickly after trauma and joint replacement surgery and get back to functioning sooner. At Torbay, he pioneered successful pathways for day-case joint replacements and was the first surgeon in the South West to successfully undertake a day case hip replacement in September 2018.
