Personal Profile

Personal Profile

Minhal Chatoo, a distinguished Knee Surgeon based in Hertfordshire, excels in treating sports injuries and arthritic conditions affecting the knee. Renowned for being one of the highest volume Knee Osteotomy Surgeons in the UK, he also serves as a Faculty member on the Basingstoke International Knee Osteotomy Course, a testament to his expertise and leadership in the field.
His medical journey led him from the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore to advanced fellowship training at New York University Medical Centre. In 2003, Minhal Chatoo was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the East and North Herts NHS Trust, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Minhal Chatoo’s practice is exclusively dedicated to addressing knee problems. He is committed to conducting thorough assessments and investigations for his patients, always prioritising non-surgical methods of treatment whenever possible. However, when surgery becomes necessary, he is proficient in a wide array of procedures. These include Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, Single (ACL) and Multiple Knee Ligament reconstructions, Osteotomy (realignment surgery), as well as Partial/Total Knee Replacements and Patella realignment and stabilisation surgery.

This focused approach not only highlights Minhal Chatoo’s dedication to his specialty but also his commitment to providing the highest standard of care for individuals suffering from knee issues.

Minhal Chatoo is a leading expert in the management of ACL/cruciate ligament and meniscal/cartilage injuries, offering advanced techniques for both primary and revision ACL/cruciate ligament reconstructions as well as multi-ligament reconstructions. His work is primarily carried out at the East & North Herts Trust, where he has established a reputation for excellence in the field.

With a keen focus on the treatment of the “younger” arthritic knee, Minhal Chatoo is a strong advocate for preserving as much of the knee joint as possible. He highlights the importance of considering alternative treatments to total knee replacement, noting the comparatively less favourable results of knee replacements versus hip replacements, as recorded in the National Joint Registry.
Minhal Chatoo brings a wealth of experience in “joint preserving” techniques, such as osteotomy (leg realignment) and partial knee replacement. His efforts have notably led to the development of the Knee Osteotomy Service at Lister Hospital, transforming it into a Regional Centre for Knee Preservation Surgery. The centre is celebrated for completing over 400 Knee Osteotomies, with patient data being meticulously collected prospectively.

He is collaborating with his local Integrated Care Board and NHS Trust to introduce a fresh approach for managing Knee Arthritis in Hertfordshire. This initiative aims to swiftly refer patients with knee arthritis to the right specialists and provide suitable treatment, thereby decreasing the need for knee replacements, especially among younger individuals.

As a respected Faculty member of the Basingstoke International Knee Symposium, the premier Knee Osteotomy Conference in the UK, Minhal Chatoo shares his expertise and insights with professionals from around the world.

Outside of his professional achievements, Minhal Chatoo enjoys staying active through playing badminton. He is also musically inclined, finding joy in playing the piano and composing music in his leisure time.
