Mr Nicholas Ward is a consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon who is based in Bury St Edmunds, at both the St Edmunds Hospital and the West Suffolk Hospital.
He specialises in the management and treatment of all aspects of coloproctology, including haemorrhoids (piles), anal fistula and fissures, diverticular disease/diverticulitis, pilonidal sinus disease, rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit and colorectal cancer, including advanced colonoscopic procedures. He is also an experienced general surgeon with expertise in the management of abdominal wall and groin hernias, including local anaesthetic hernia repair and is able to investigate and treat the causes of abdominal pain.
Mr Ward qualified as a doctor in 1999 from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in London. His post-graduate medical career has been predominantly based in East Anglia.
After training in the nationally renowned laparoscopic centre in Colchester, Mr Ward undertook a postgraduate Doctorate in Medicine and submitted his thesis on the ‘Proteomics of Colorectal Cancer’. He completed his surgical training in the East of England Deanery with Specialist Registrar appointments across the region, including West Suffolk Hospital, Addenbrooke’s and The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
In 2015 Mr Ward was appointed as a Colorectal and General Surgeon in the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, where he still undertakes his NHS practice. He is currently the Clinical Lead for general surgery and was previously the lead for the Colorectal Cancer multi-disciplinary team.
Mr Ward is involved in the education of junior doctors and trainee surgeons at the West Suffolk Hospital. He is the surgical training coordinator for medical students from the University of Cambridge during their attachments at West Suffolk and is also an advanced colonoscopy trainer.
Mr Ward holds weekly clinics at the St Edmunds Hospital and welcomes insured and self-pay patients. He has a calm, friendly demeanour and prides himself in offering the best possible service to his patients with an individualised and caring approach.
