Personal Profile

Mr Raj Kugan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery.  He is one of few surgeons in the Trust to carry out Total Ankle Replacements (TAR).

Training and Appointment

He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Aberdeen  in 1998, and stayed in Scotland for his specialist postgraduate surgical training (other than an MSc degree in Orthopaedics at University College London)

Mr Kugan completed his specialist orthopaedic training at the Oxford Deanery in 2012. He completed a British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) recognised Foot and Ankle fellowship in England and an International Fellowship under Professor Beat Hintermann MD, the Founder and Chair of the Center of Excellence for Foot and Ankle in Switzerland. 
He also completed Frame fellowship at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford under Professor Martin McNally, an “influential force in the world of fracture-related infections” and current Lead Surgeon at the Oxford Bone Infection Unit.

Mr Kugan has been a consultant over the last 10 years in Cheltenham and Gloucester NHS Trust and moved to Worcester in 2021.

Current Practice

Mr Kugan’s principle interests are foot and ankle surgery. He has a special interest in ankle replacement and diabetic foot. Routine procedures performed include first MTP fusion/MTP replacement, bunion surgery, ankle arthroscopy, ankle ligament surgery, mosaicplasty, tendo-achilles surgery, ankle fusion, ankle replacement, hind foot and mid-foot fusion, rheumatoid foot surgery and flat foot correction. 

Mr Kugan has experience in correction of deformity, non-union, osteomyelitis, limb lengthening, bone transport, distal femoral osteotomy, proximal tibial osteotomy and supra-malleolar osteotomy. 
Some of the fixation methods that he uses include plating, Ilizarov/Taylor Spatial frame and nailing.

In his NHS role, Mr Kugan works closely with the Vascular team to provide a diabetic foot service.  He has introduced new techniques to the Foot and Ankle Service including a bridge plating technique for Lisfranc injury, Talus Hemicap, Matrix Implantation for OCD and hamstring reconstruction of the deltoid ligament.

His other main interest is trauma surgery with a focus on complex foot and ankle fractures.
