Personal profile

Mr Pilling is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in hip and knee replacement surgery.

He qualified from Sheffield University in 2004 and undertook specialist Orthopaedic training on the prestigious Oswestry training rotation before returning to Yorkshire in 2017. His expertise in hip and knee surgery was gained from renowned UK Fellowships in Harrogate and Leeds. He was appointed as a Consultant in 2018.

Mr Pilling gained a masters degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University, gaining expertise in Biomechanics and the materials used in Orthopaedic implants. He uses this knowledge to tailor to the needs of each patient with the implants and techniques available to maximise the chances of a successful, long term outcome.

His busy NHS practice is based at Harrogate and District Foundation Trust where he treats General Orthopaedic Trauma and has an elective practice that is tailored to hip and knee complaints.
His approach is directed at identifying the underlying cause to any hip or knee pathology. This enables a treatment plan to address all aspects of a patient's function in order to optimise the results of treatment. The support of specialist physiotherapists, plus swift and high quality investigations help to achieve this goal.

At the heart of Mr Pilling's practice is a commitment to patient communication and care. Providing a clear and concise explanation of the diagnosis – something that should not be taken for granted - and treatment goal is a fundamental part of patient satisfaction and rehabilitation.

Mr Pilling maintains an active interest in education and is a Clinical Supervisor for junior doctors in their early foundation years following qualification. He is also the Medical Student Lead for the Orthopaedic department at Harrogate District Hospital, teaching and assessing tomorrow's doctors' Orthopaedic knowledge necessary for their upcoming career in the NHS. Furthermore, he is the author and contributor of a number of surgical articles in national and international journals.
