Mr Rowland Rees

Personal Profile

Mr Rees is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Andrologist at University Hospital Southampton and University College London Hospital. He received his medical degree from The University of London in 1995 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2006.

His private practice is based at Sarum Road Hospital, Winchester and OneWelbeck in London, and in the NHS he provides a regional tertiary service for male genito-urethral surgery.

He trained in Urology in the Wessex region, and in 2006 became the first Coloplast Senior Fellow in Andrology at The Institute of Urology, UCLH, London. There he developed an interest in prosthetic urology and microsurgery and is now one of the most experienced Andrologists in the UK with a high-volume practice in penile prosthesis, artificial urinary sphincter surgery, and vasectomy reversal. A significant amount of his practice is tertiary (referrals from other urologists), and he is often asked to give second opinions and act as an expert witness in the field of andrology.

More recently he has visited and collaborated with world-leading colleagues in the USA and Italy to introduce minimally invasive techniques to the region, such as the infra-pubic penile implant.

Mr Rees’s philosophy is to improve outcomes for patients through sub-specialisation, expertise, and high-volume surgery, and he is in the top 5 surgeons by volume in the country for many of the procedures he performs. Another important facet of his practice is the personalised and attentive care, and the good and prompt communication throughout the patient journey, with the help of a fantastic support team.

Multi-disciplinary teams and other roles:

Mr Rees enjoys working collaboratively, and is a member of the UCLH penile cancer MDT – the largest in Europe, which discusses all new penile cancer cases in the region on a weekly basis.  He also partakes in the South of England Urethral reconstruction MDT with colleagues from London, Birmingham, and Bristol.

He is past Chairman and Secretary of the Andrology Section of BAUS (2018-2020) and sat on the committee for a number of years prior to that. During his time as BAUS Andrology chairman he formed and chaired a Penile Prosthesis Working group which brought all the active UK penile implant surgeons together to discuss new commissioning proposals.

He has also served as a regional representative on NHS England’s Urology CRG (commissioning body).

Teaching and Training:

Mr Rees is actively involved in teaching of a range of medical personnel both in the region, nationally and internationally.  He trains and teaches trainee urologists and medical students as part of everyday work, and recent other teaching activities include:

Research:

Prior to clinical training Mr Rees undertook a period of basic science research at the Wolfson Institute, UCL, looking at the pharmacology of genital smooth muscle and new therapeutic targets for erectile dysfunction. He also has a 1st Class Hons. In Neurophysiology from the University of London.

Since sub-specialising in andrological urology he has been involved in several surgical clinical trials in Southampton, and written over 10 book chapters and 100 papers in the field of andrology and genito-urethral surgery, listed here
