Personal Profile

Personal Profile

Dr Dubrey attended Cardiff University where he obtained a 1st class Honours degree in Human Physiology. He then studied Medicine at the Welsh National School of Medicine and qualified MB BCh in 1983. He was awarded prizes in Paediatrics and General Practice.

He completed several posts in Medicine at Hospitals in Brighton, Chichester, Portsmouth, Midhurst and Winchester, initially with a view to becoming a GP, explaining his Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Changing direction and starting a career in Cardiology at the Westminster Hospital, he obtained a British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship award in 1992 and spent several years studying identical twins who were discordant for diabetes. The aim was to determine the role of genetics and environment in explaining why one twin might be diabetic and his/her identical twin not so. This took several years and involved intercepting some from other countries and on one occasion even obtaining a licence to see twins in a high security prison.

In 1993 he received a Medical school award for this work, from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical school, for advances in cardiovascular science. This culminated in the award of a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) in 1993.

Then followed several years training in cardiology at the Chelsea and Westminster, The West Middlesex, The Hammersmith, Charing Cross, Harefield and the Royal Brompton Hospitals. In 1999, while in post at the Transplant Unit of Harefield Hospital, he obtained certification to practice both General Medicine and Cardiology.
He worked for two years in Boston, Massachusetts, USA at the Boston University Medical Centre.

Following his return to the UK, he was appointed as Consultant cardiologist at Hillingdon Hospital with sessions at the Harefield and Royal Brompton Hospitals.  He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2003 and, also having American medical qualifications, fellowship of the American College of Cardiology in 2009.

His experience is in General cardiology with specific interests in heart failure, atrial fibrillation, amyloid and sarcoid heart disease. Currently he is working as an NHS Consultant at Hillingdon Hospital and in the private sector at the Circle Health Group Hospital in Northwood (Bishops Wood) and Harrow (The Clementine Churchill). He is recognised by all the major Health Insurance companies.

His career has involved a considerable amount of research and he has several hundred publications. He has been the Director of Research & Development at the Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospital NHS Trust for the last 10 years and is on the Editorial board of 2 Heart Journals.
In addition to Research he has had a strong interest in Teaching, supervising a large programme allowing prospective Medical applicants at local schools to experience medicine at the Hospital.

Outside of medicine, his interests include the French language and travel to France, with which he has strong connections. He is keen on kayaking, cycling and walking the dog, in addition to trying not to collect anymore antiques, despite an urge to buy chandeliers and old mirrors.

On a more personal note, I would like to say that I always aim to have a straightforward, frank and open discussion with my patients. Often an easily understood explanation of a clinical event can go a long way to allaying anxiety. A very recent consultation in 2021, resulted in a delightful E-mail from the patient, which with their consent, I have reproduced below:

“Thank you for a lovely scheduled appointment yesterday evening.
My daughter was so impressed that she said…What a lovely doctor…every doctor should be like him…so friendly and treats his patients like friends.
I will update you with my progress……….
Thank you once again”
