Personal Profile

Mr Sriskandarasa Senthilkumaran (known as Senthil) is a locally trained orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery. He is also a general adult orthopaedic trauma surgeon.

Senthil performs all types of foot and ankle surgery including deformity corrections and arthritis surgery. He also treats foot and ankle sports injuries. He prefers to use minimally invasive or keyhole techniques where appropriate. He performs minimally invasive bunion correction, lesser toe surgery, Achilles and plantar fascia surgery. He thrives to develop new surgical techniques to benefit his patients. He is a proponent of early movement and rehabilitation after injuries and surgery.

He came to Aberdeen in 2003 to study medicine at the University of Aberdeen and graduated with MBChB and BMedSci in 2009. He did his junior doctor placements at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Dr Gray's hospital. During which time, he undertook a Masters degree in Surgical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He did his Orthopaedic training in the North of Scotland Rotation across Aberdeen and Inverness. He learned his orthopaedic craft under experienced senior surgeons who are now his colleagues in the NHS and Albyn Hospital. He obtained his specialist trauma and orthopaedic registration in 2020.

Having completed his basic orthopaedic training, Senthil undertook two fellowships to enhance his surgical skills in the art of foot and ankle surgery in Glasgow and Australia. He did his advance fellowship training under the guidance of Mr C Senthil Kumar in Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he gained experience in ankle replacements. To further his experience, he then undertook his second fellowship in Melbourne under Mr Harvinder Bedi at OrthoSport Victoria. He acquired experience in all aspect of foot and ankle surgery, especially focusing on minimally invasive foot surgery.

Senthil returned to his adopted home city of Aberdeen and started his consultant career in 2021. His elective practice is based at Woodend General Hospital and trauma practice is at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary which is a Major Trauma Centre covering the North of Scotland and the Islands. He manages general fracture trauma and complex ankle and foot trauma. He is also member of the local diabetic foot team.

He is a supervisor and trainer for both junior foundation doctors and specialist orthopaedic trainees. He is a tutor and mentor for medical students at the university.  He has a great passion for teaching and delivers teaching for registrars and allied health professionals.

Outside of his time in the hospital, he enjoys hiking with his wife and 2 sons around the beautiful munros and lochs in Scotland. He is also a keen DIYer and gardener, taking on ambitious projects at home. Being from Sri Lanka, he is naturally an avid cricket fan and an amateur player.
