Mr Thomas Kersey

Personal Profile

Mr Kersey is an experienced and highly regarded Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon who presents at numerous national and international industry meetings and has published over 20 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals.

Originally from the West Country, he conducted his early training in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London, qualifying with MBBS from the University of London in 2001. Continuing his professional development he completed further specialist training on the Peninsula Rotation (Devon), and went on to gain his fellowship to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Having dual fellowship in Glaucoma and Oculoplastic surgery, Mr Kersey is fully trained in small and micro incision (keyhole) cataract surgery using a range of injectable lenses (including toric and multifocal). His first fellowship was in Oculoplastics and Orbital surgery in Auckland (New Zealand) with the world respected surgeons Paul Rosser, Brian Sloan and Richard Hart. His second fellowship was in Glaucoma with Professor Phillip Bloom at the Western and Hillingdon hospitals (London).

Mr Kersey is passionate about teaching and has trained eye surgeons of all grades across the country. He has run regional and national surgical workshops in oculoplastics, glaucoma and cataract surgery for a number of years.

He is a highly experienced cataract surgeon who developed the high volume cataract surgery lists at Frimley Park Hospital whilst clinical lead in the department. He has extensive deep knowledge and training in surgical simulation (EyeSi) and pioneered cataract surgery simulation teaching using virtual reality (VR) simulators writing several papers and presenting nationally and internationally on the subject. He introduced and setup VR simulation to the Westcountry and Kent, Surrey and Sussex training regions to teach the next generation of surgeons cataract surgery; accelerating their learning curve away from live patients. More recently his focus is on the deployment of ultra modern intraocular lens technology to benefit patients and allow less dependence on glasses post cataract surgery.

Mr Kersey has established and run the highly successful glaucoma service at Frimley Park Hospital for over 10 years which has been a beacon service across the UK and one of the first to deploy highly trained allied health professionals (AHPs). He has trained several AHP’s who have in turn developed services across the UK along the same model. He has pioneered and established a robust service at Frimley to deliver minimally invasive glaucoma surgery procedures such as istents, hydrus stents, viscocanalostomy and Xen stents for glaucoma; these have helped his patients to have faster recovery times following surgery to control the intraocular pressure and stabilise their glaucoma. He is an active member of several industry panels and contributes to future development of procedures and medications.

Mr Kersey has an active and keen interest in eyelid rejuvenation and treatments of the skin and eyelid. He undertakes a wide variety of functional and cosmetic procedures around the eyes including droopy eyelid correction and blepharoplasty as well as eyelid malposition such as entropion/ectropion and eyelid cancer treatments.
