Mr Bateman is a kind and compassionate leader in spine care who works with our distinguished team at Circle Health Group. As a valued member of our team Mr Bateman plays a pivotal role in addressing complex spinal issues, offering innovative solutions and personalised treatment plans.

Mr Bateman completed two prestigious one year spine surgery fellowships prior to his appointment as a Consultant Spine Surgeon at Royal Derby Spinal Centre in 2017 and has a vast experience of managing degenerative, traumatic and metastatic disease of the whole spine from occiput to sacrum. The majority of his clinical practice involves injections and surgery for cervical and lumbar disc pathology, and injections for back and neck pain. He is passionate about patient-centred care and likes to explain to people their treatment options based on the best available evidence. This allows them to make informed choices that best suit their situation.

Education and training

Mr Bateman’s keen interest in spine care began when studied medicine and surgery at Imperial College School of Medicine. He was given the opportunity to complete an intercalated Bachelor of Science degree where he was also able to investigate and publish research on spinal kinematics during rowing with the help of the British Rowing team. Mr Bateman completed basic surgical training in London and then went on to higher surgical training in Trama and Orthopaedics on the South East Thames training rotation. During this time he also completed a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine and was appointment Chief Medical Officer for Brands Hatch Racing Circuit. He has provided medical services at the World Rowing Championships, London 2012 Oympic Games and numerous national and international motorsport events including Formula 1.

Having completed higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with a focus on spine surgery Mr Bateman then successfully completed a one year advanced spine surgery fellowship at Frimley Park Hospital in the UK. He then travelled to Canada for a year with his family to undertake a further complex spine surgery fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre offered through the University of Toronto. During that time he was awarded the prestigious Soli Lam Spine Fellowship from the British Orthopaedic Association and a Zimmer International Fellowship. He completed several research publications and was awarded several prizes for his work. This intensive training equipped him with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to navigate the intricacies of spinal conditions. His commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements drives him to participate in national and international conferences, ensuring that his patients benefit from the latest breakthroughs in spine care. Research and teaching

Mr Bateman is actively involved in spine research and has links with Nottingham Trent University, University of Derby and University of Nottingham. He has previously been an executive committee member for the Society for Back Pain Research. He has been local Principle Investigator for several clinical trials including DRAFFT2, WAX, ASPIRE-SSI, UCES, POISE and PolyFix DCM. He has presented research both nationally and internationally and contributed to the medical literature through publications in several internationally renowned journals. Mr Bateman is a recognised surgical trainer for both orthopaedic and neurosurgical higher surgical trainees and delivers regular regional teaching on various aspects of spine care to medical students and surgical trainees. Mr Bateman regularly directs and teaches on the Royal College of Surgeons educational courses for surgeons in training. Clinical experience Mr Bateman remains an honorary Consultant Spine Surgeon at Royal Derby Spinal Centre and an active member of the multidisciplinary team. His clinical practice is now based primarily in the independent sector where he is able to focus on offering a full range of personalised spinal services. Mr Bateman believes in the importance of feedback and monitoring patient outcomes. He uses the British Spine Registry to collect feedback and monitor Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) before and after any surgical interventions. He has received consistently good feedback from patients and surgical outcomes for his patients are consistently above national averages. Mr Bateman's expertise encompasses a wide array of spinal conditions, including degenerative disc diseases, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, spinal deformities and tumours. His proficiency in both surgical and non-surgical interventions allows him to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each patient.
