Personal Profile

Mr Vijay Korwar is currently working as a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust since 2020.

He had registrar-level training in the UK covering most general surgery subspecialties which include; Breast surgery, Colorectal surgery, Vascular surgery, Endocrine surgery, Trauma, and Transplant surgery. He had further specialist training in Hepatobiliary Pancreatic surgery (Manchester University Hospital) Upper Gastrointestinal surgery (University Hospital Bristol) and Bariatric surgery (North Bristol NHS Trust).

Mr Korwar was first appointed as a Consultant Upper GI surgeon at Southmead Hospital, Bristol in 2017. Later, he worked at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as a Consultant Upper GI surgeon. He works as a trainer for specialist surgical trainees and he regularly teaches in courses conducted by Royal College of Surgeons.

Clinical Interests

As an experienced consultant surgeon, Mr Korwar regularly performs keyhole gallbladder and bile duct exploration surgery. He has set up laparoscopic ultrasound service for gallstones at Sandwell Hospital. He performs key hole Total Extra Peritoneal (without entering abdominal cavity) groin hernia repair and incisional hernia repair. He has special interest in anti-reflux and hiatal hernia surgery. He is JAG (Joint Advisory Group on gastrointestinal endoscopy) accredited endoscopist, performing regular gastroduodenoscopy and intervention.

Mr Korwar is actively involved in research. He has presented papers in national and international meetings. He worked in national research projects (Bluebelle, Sunflower and PANC study) and published scientific papers on outcomes after biological mesh repair of hiatus hernia, breast reconstruction and parathyroid surgery.
