Personal profile

Mr Akhtar has done most of his clinical training in Ireland. He moved to the UK in 2006 and began working as a Consultant in 2012. He has worked for 2 years at Worcester Hospital before moving to Royal Bolton for a Substantive Benign Upper GI/General and Emergency Surgeon post. He is on the specialist register of the Irish Medical Council (Ireland) and GMC (UK).

His clinical operative work at Royal Bolton involves elective benign surgery including gallbladders, hernia, benign lumps, anal skin tags, benign skin lesions and pilonidal sinus. His emergency work involves operation on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s/Ulcerative Colitis Resections). He also does emergency work on bowel cancers.

He is a Clinical Appraiser for doctors and a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for trainees. He currently works as a Consultant General Surgeon at Royal Bolton Hospital, where he is a core member of the Upper GI and SMDT Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). He also sees 2 week wait suspected cancer referrals in clinics and is part of urgent referral to clinics for acute weight loss investigations.

In addition to the responsibilities above he is a trainer for Physician associates.
