Private treatment for injuries and medical conditions affecting the brain
Neuropsychological assessment looks to understand the relationships between our brains and our behaviours, in particular how brain injuries or disorders might impact our cognitive functioning, and identifies appropriate treatment based on this understanding.
Acquired brain injury and neurological conditions can have far-reaching impacts on our behaviour, beyond those you might expect. From increased fear and anxiety to changes in sensory perceptions, memory and attention problems, stress and depression, and significant changes in mood and emotive responses. Neurological problems can be incredibly difficult to cope with, which is why it's so important to get the right help.
If you or a loved one is living with a neurological illness or the effects of brain damage, our clinical experts are here to help. Call or book online today to arrange a consultation with one of our experienced specialists.
You might consult a neuropsychologist if you are experiencing:
Memory loss affects people in different ways and to different extents. Neuropsychology can help identify the cause and help to reduce or manage memory problems.
Neuropsychologists can help with the effects of a head injury - for example memory loss, seizures or concussion. In some instances, you will be able to have therapy to restore normal functioning. In other cases you will learn to live with a new cognitive function following permanent brain injury.
Early signs of dementia include memory loss, confusion, mood changes and difficulty when concentrating. If you have dementia, psychological tests can be carried out to check your memory.
The most common forms of dementia are Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain has been cut off. The main signs of a stroke include a drooping on one side of your face, weakness in one of your arms and slurred speech or an inability to talk.
Mental health disorders including depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can affect our cognitive functioning, an impact which may get worse over time or flare up alongside the condition.
Neuropsychological tests, also known as cognitive assessments, can be used to reveal cognitive changes and difficulties. Most often, these tests include answering a series of questions on a piece of paper. You will also be given a score for each of these tests. These tests examine your short and long-term memory, concentration, spatial and temporal (time) awareness and your communication skills.
If you're suffering from a cognitive impairment or have had a brain injury, cognitive behavioural therapy can help restore functioning and manage cognitive impairments. This form of therapy includes a personalised programme of specific skills training. Other forms of talk therapy may also be recommended.
This is a new form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) that can be used to treat severe depression. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy works by challenging and altering your negative thought patterns and allows you to effectively manage these negative thoughts. It can also encourage you to remain calm and more positive.
Your neuropsychologist will build a personalised programme for you, working with physiotherapists and speech therapists to improve your cognitive function. Your neuropsychologist can provide you with tools to support you following a stroke. These include adopting new habits into your routine such as keeping a diary to help with your memory problems. Many people will also work with a physiotherapist to help with physical rehabilitation after a stroke.
Often treatment will be covered by your private health insurance, but not always. Speak to your provider directly to see what's included in your policy.
If you want to pay for your own treatment, you can either pay in full or take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of up to five years.
Our self-pay customers benefit from fixed-price packages, meaning you'll know exactly what you're going to pay before you book your surgery. Your initial consultation and early diagnostic tests won't be included, but the cost of your surgery and hospital fees are, and so is your aftercare programme. There are no hidden costs down the line.
To book your initial consultation, call our dedicated team of advisors, or take advantage of our easy online booking system.
