Dr-Arthur-Henderson-Consultant Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon

Professional Profile Arthur Henderson

Mr Arthur Henderson is a consultant ENT surgeon who has experience in all problems of the ear, nose, and throat, but has a specialist interest in otology (all problems affecting the ear, including ear infections, hearing loss and balance). As well as working at the Bath Clinic he works as a surgeon at the Royal United Hospital.

He treats a range of conditions including hearing loss, perforated ear drums, cholesteatoma and glue ear, as well as problems related to the nose and throat including nasal blockage, septal deviation, sinusitis, nasal polyps, and tonsillitis. Alongside hearing assessment and dewaxing (also known as syringing or microsuction) he provides a comprehensive assessment of the ear and ear health.

Mr Henderson also has specialist training in all aspects of ENT related to diving, underwater medicine, and aviation, being the lead surgeon for ENT in the Royal Navy. He is the national advisor to Defence on Diving and Aviation related ENT conditions, as well as advisor to the HSE on occupational diving and ENT.

With his extensive experience as a diving ENT specialist for both military and civilian divers and pilots, he welcomes all patients with diving ENT problems and flying related ENT problems – whether as part of work, as a hobby, or simply a problem when travelling. Many people experience an ear problem and diving, such as barotrauma, hearing loss, a perforated eardrum, or balance disturbance. Equally, anyone flying (from commercial pilots to passengers) can have difficulty equalising when flying, and develop problems with barotrauma (aeroplane ear) and sinus pain that may affect their ability to fly or pass a medical examination. Having completed addition training in Occupational Medicine and ENT, Arthur is able to provide a comprehensive ENT assessment and opinion on fitness for HSE occupational diving, BSAC and PADI recreational diving, and CAA commercial certification.

Mr Henderson qualified with distinction from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, with further training in Bristol, Southampton, and the South-West, before undertaking a fellowship in lateral skull base surgery, otology and neurotology at the internationally renowned Rotary hearing centre in St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver.

Alongside this he completed a Master’s degree with distinction in leadership, the Diploma in Occupational Medicine, and received both the Royal Society of Medicine Otology Gold Medal, and the Alan Gibb Prize for ear surgery.

As a Royal Navy Medical Officer he deployed with HMS Ark Royal and HMS Ocean along with Harrier 1(F) squadron and 814 NAS Merlin helicopters. He also spent time with the Fleet diving group as a diving medical officer, working as an instructor at the Submarine Escape Training Tank and as a member of the Submarine Parachute Assistance Group.

He is married with two children, and in his spare time is a keen gardener and amateur cider maker.

Flying and Diving ENT

ENT problems are common in divers, pilots, and people flying for travel as a result of the pressure changes involved. Many different conditions can have an effect upon both the safety of flying and diving, or parachuting, and the enjoyment of these as a hobby or a career.

Pressure problems, like barotrauma (ear squeeze, or aeroplane ear), eustachian tube dysfunction, sinus blockage, and balance problems (alongside underlying ENT problems such as perforated ear drums, or nasal polyps), need careful specialist assessment and treatment to make the difference between successfully and safely flying or diving again, or being unfit to do so.

As such, our specialist ENT team can diagnose, treat, and provide you the reassurance and medical certification or approval required to returning to flying, diving, or parachuting.
