Personal Profile

Dr Omar Fersia is a Consultant Cardiologist based in Forth Valley Royal Hospital. He is the Cardiac Devices Lead in NHS Forth Valley with subspecialty expertise in advanced cardiac imaging, including advanced echocardiography, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure, coronary angiography and devices implantation.

Dr Fersia attended Medical School at the University of Dundee achieving MBChB with Honours in 2007, followed by postgraduate medical training in Ninewells Hospital. He completed his specialist cardiology training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, with subspecialty interest in Cardiac Imaging and Cardiac Devices. He was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist in 2019 and was the Cardiac Services Lead in NHS Dumfries and Galloway, before moving to NHS Forth Valley in 2020 to lead the cardiac devices services.

Dr Fersia has a keen interest in education and training and currently works as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and the Foundation Program Director in NHS Forth Valley. He has been involved in multiple multicentred research trials in addition to leading a research project on the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on cardiac services in Scotland which was published in the BMJ  journal and presented at the Scottish Cardiac Society Conference in 2021.

Dr Fersia has professional accreditations in Advanced Cardiac Imaging with the British Society of Echocardiography (Transthoracic echocardiography, including 2D echocardiograms, 4D echocardiograms, contrast and bubble echocardiograms, Trans-oesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography) as well as CT Coronary Angiogram and Cardiac MRI. He is certified by the European Heart Rhythm Association in Cardiac Devices Implantation (including permanent pacemakers, ICD, CRT, subcutaneous ICD and conduction system pacing).

Dr Fersia has been successful in setting up a Direct Access Echocardiogram Service in Kings Park Hospital in addition to running 'one stop clinics' in Kings Park Hospital where consultations and investigations, including echocardiograms and cardiac monitoring, can take place at the same time in the same setting.

In addition, Dr Fersia has expertise in managing the cardiovascular effect of COVID, in addition to sports medicine including divers with possible decompression sickness. He runs an advanced echo service with bubble studies and transoesophageal echocardiograms for commercial and recreational divers from all over Scotland. He has published widely on heart failure and cardiac imaging in high impact journals and is regularly invited to talk and present on national and international meetings.

Dr Fersia is very approachable and welcomes referrals for the assessment and investigations of all cardiac conditions.
