Personal Profile

Mr Ricardo Camprodon is a Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Upper GI Surgeon at the Priory Hospital in Birmingham.

He graduated in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1994. Following this, Mr Camprodon obtained an MSc in Surgical Sciences in 1997 and commenced his basic surgical training in the UK in 1998. During his training, he conducted a multicentre research project on Transplant Immunology, collaborating with Sheffield University, Kings College Hospital, and the University of Barcelona, for which he was awarded a Ph.D.

Subsequently, Mr Camprodon pursued a higher surgical training, focusing on oesophago-gastric resectional surgery at the Northern General, Royal Marsden, and Royal Surrey County Hospitals, as well as Bariatric and Antireflux Surgery at St George’s Hospital. He further honed his skills through a Post-CCT Fellowship in Antireflux and Bariatric Surgery at Ashford and St Peters’ Hospital.

In 2019, he assumed the role of Consultant in Benign Upper GI, Laparoscopic, and General Surgery, and joined Russells Hall Hospital in 2021.

More recently, Mr Camprodon has rejoined Ashford and St Peters’ Hospital as a Honorary Consultant Bariatric Surgeon.

With a keen interest in both clinical and basic research, he has contributed to peer-reviewed articles and attained two international prizes. His ongoing research focuses on perioperative care, including operational systems, and advancements in antireflux surgery. He actively participates in the National Hiatal Surgery Registry and serve as a reviewer for the European Surgical Research Journal.

Clinical Interests

Mr Camprodon's clinical expertise encompasses the management of complex gallbladder and biliary stone disease, antireflux surgery including paraoesophageal hernias, and abdominal wall hernias, employing both laparoscopic and open approaches. He also specialises in pilonidal disease, utilising the 'Sail Flap' technique to minimise disease recurrence and, wound sepsis and dehiscence.
