Personal Profile

Dr Sarah Lowndes is a Consultant Medical Oncologist.

Graduating in medicine from the University of Oxford in 1998, Dr Lowndes trained in oncology at Southampton General Hospital, and then at the Churchill Cancer Centre, Oxford, completing her specialist training in 2010.

Between 2003 and 2007, she undertook research as a Cancer Research UK clinical fellow at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA leading to a doctorate in copper chelation as an anti-angiogenic therapy in solid tumours.

In 2010 Dr Lowndes took up a position as an NHS consultant medical oncologist specialising in the chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment of colorectal cancer, cancer of unknown primary (CUP) and tumours of the gastrointestinal tract.

Dr Lowndes set up the acute oncology service on her arrival at the Great Western Hospital and was the Oncology Department Lead from 2010-2015. She is lead for the hospital CUP MDT and has been chair of the Thames Valley Cancer Network CUP working group. She is also the Great Western Hospital Trust Chemotherapy Lead.

She has been Principle Investigator for approximately 15 phase II and phase III clinical trials in colorectal, CUP and lung cancer at the Great Western Hospital. In 2015 she received an award from The National Institute for Health Research as a leading commercial principal investigator. She has worked as a national peer reviewer in CUP services.

In 2016 Dr Lowndes was elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
