Personal Profile

Mr Hekal has been on the specialist register for Orthopaedics and Trauma since November 2009. During his training, he did 4 spine fellowships at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Royal National Hospital in Stanmore, Westmead Hospital and the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. This training gave him vast experience in Paediatric and Adult Spine Surgery.

Mr Hekal was appointed as a Consultant Spine Surgeon in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough in June 2010, still working there now. He has been the lead Spine Surgeon in the Trust since April 2016.

His practice covers the whole spectrum of Paediatric and Adult Spine Surgery, including: spine deformities, trauma, metastatic cord compression, degenerative cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders, balloon kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty for insufficiency fractures, minimally invasive spine surgeries and nerve root blocks.

Mr Hekal is responsible for the spine training of ST in the Trust and also training medical students.

  • Degenerative cervical and lumbar spine disorders
  • Revision spine surgery for failed back syndrome
  • Nerve root block for radicular pain
  • Facet and Sacro-iliac joint injections for back pain and referred pain
